Disposable Tonometer Prisms
The Goldmann Applanation Tonometer has become the standard method of testing Intraocular Pressure (IOP). Concern has always been expressed that there is a risk of cross-infection between patients even though it is recommended that prisms are sterilized or disinfected between uses.
The risk became more prominent in the 1990s. It should be noted that there has been no known case of transmission of HIV through tear fluid, but even less serious infections can and do cause problems in ophthalmology departments.
In response to these issues, Clement Clarke has developed a low cost disposable prism, which does not compromise the performance of Goldmann Applanation Tonometers.
