Test Drive Eclipse Remote Control

In the past it’s been difficult to demo the Eclipse Remote Control (ERC) desk unit because the scene has to be just right. Everything from the lighting to the lane to the desk location matters. Soon we’re unveiling a new interactive demo to show you how ERC boosts efficiency by centralizing control of room lighting.

Here are some ERC’s highlights, in less than 50 words:

  • Compact; fits on your desk – even unconventional ones
  • Handles up to eight lighting scenes triggered by instrument moves and/or ERC
  • Wireless control using infrared beams; no office construction or rewiring needed
  • Installs in minutes by swapping light switch
  • All controls and instruments are within reach
  • Programming easier than a home thermostat

Look for updates here in Iota on where to demo Eclipse. For the latest updates from Haag-Streit and Reliance Medical Products, follow us on Twitter and ‘like’ us on Facebook.

Ditch the Disinfectant. Switch to Tonosafe.

How much time have you or your techs spent disinfecting reusable prisms for the Goldmann Applanation Tonometer? With Tonosafe disposable prisms, you’ll save time and money without losing the reliability of their reusable counterparts.

A recent study at the Veteran Affairs Boston Healthcare System found virtually no difference in readings with both prisms. The study included patients with extreme intraocular pressure. Since the results of the study, the VA healthcare system in Boston has begun to phase out reusable prisms for Tonosafe disposables.

See Tonosafe disposable prisms on display at SECO booth #351.

Super Mario Helps Treat Children with Amblyopia

Video games could soon be a valid treatment option for children aged 10 to 18 who suffer from amblyopia. According to a study by the American Academy of Ophthalmology, kids who played video games for an hour daily noticed significant vision gains when coupled with standard treatment.

Of the 100 participants in the study, 30 percent reported huge boosts in vision and 60 percent reported at least some improvement after a gaming session.

Saurav Sen, a 16 year old who participated in the study, began by playing shooting games with only his weaker eye. After a few months, his vision improved substantially along with his ability to study, take tests, play tennis and, of course, play games, he said.

“After a few months, his vision improved substantially along with his ability to study, take tests, play tennis and, of course, play games, he said.”

Dr. Somen Gosh, the team’s leader, is ecstatic about the results and hopes to continue to explore amblyopia treatment options for children. “We should never give up on our patients, even the older children, but instead offer them hope and treatment designed to help them achieve better vision,” he said.

For more on the study, see the press release from the AAO.

Study Validates LENSTAR’s Dual-Zone Autokeratometry

The results are in: LENSTAR’s dual-zone autokeratometry measures astigmatism equal to or better than manual keratometry. The findings, published in the Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, chalk up another win for the optical biometer that makes seven measurements in seconds.

The study simulated outcomes of toric IOL implantation based on real patient data from four clinical sites. The results showed no difference between manual keratometry and dual-zone automated keratometry from the LENSTAR LS 900® biometer.
